 | | Question: | | Do Mobil 1 Filters Contain a Lubricated Filter Gasket as Advertised? | | Why does your Mobil 1 filter packaging advertise a "Premium lubricated filter gasket (that) provides a tight seal and allows for easy removal". Not ONE DARN drop of gasket lubrication was evident on the M1-204 filter I just purchased??? | | -- William White, Cocoa, FL | | | Answer: | The Mobil 1 line of oil filters has a premium compound nitrile rubber gasket that has an "internal" chemical lubricant blended within the rubber compound used when molding the filter. The lubricant "blooms" or comes to the surface of the finished gasket and will continue to do this during the normal life of the gasket. The lubricant will not appear wet or oily on the surface, however, when compared to a conventional filter gasket, has a noticeably "slicker" feel. The addition of this lubricant to the rubber compound will reduce the installation torque of the Mobil 1 filter over that of a conventional gasket, making it easier to achieve the recommended number of turns past gasket contact. Removal torque is also reduced by a similar amount, making it easier to remove the filter at the next filter change. The internal lubricant is not intended to replace manually oiling the gasket prior to installation. We recommend oiling the gasket for all oil filter installations.
