 | | Question: | | Do New Diesel Engines Use More Oil Initially | | I purchased a Mercedes-Benz 2008 GL 320 CDI diesel using Mobil 1. After 2500 miles it was down 2 quarts of oil. The dealer explained by stating that diesel engines use more oil when new, but get better the more miles driven. This sounds shaky to me, and I would like to know if you experts know if this is true. Thanks. | | -- Fred McKinney, Temple Terrace, FL | | | Answer: | Higher oil consumption in a new vehicle is usually associated with engine break-in, which means that the piston rings and cylinder liners need to mate with each other. Continue to monitor oil consumption and if it does not improve in a few oil changes, we suggest you visit the dealer again. Also make sure you are not overfilling and that you are checking your oil on a level surface after the vehicle has sat for a few hours. Keep the level between the full and low marks or as indicated in your owner’s manual.
