As a Volkswagen enthusiast, I was always interested in what the newest products were from this great car manufacturer. Considering that I was looking to buy a new car and was already planning how to spend money on forthcoming modifications, I always looked on the German Volkswagen site for new ideas and products.

As I was checking the German web site in the summer of 2001 I saw something that made my jaw drop. It was the announcement for the GTI 132 KW, also known as the 25th Anniversary Edition GTI. I was mesmerized. Recaro seats, BBS wheels, full body kit, increased performance, six-speed manual transmission - all coming straight from the factory - was exactly what I was looking for. All those modifications were the exact same ones I planned on installing on my new car. The only problem was that this car was strictly for the European market and there were no announcements for the American customers.  I called my uncle into the room to show him the car and vowed to buy it if it came to the US, no matter what the cost.

In April 2002 I finally got my wish and Volkswagen unveiled the GTI 337, which was loosely based on the 25th Anniversary GTI from Europe. It was a limited edition release with only 1,500 units bound for the United States and an additional 250 units for the Canadian market. As soon as I heard about it, I called my dealership and put down a $500 deposit. No test drives, sight unseen, without ever driving a manual transmission, I put my money where my mouth is.

Once the New York City Auto Show opened to the public, I went to see the car in all its beauty. I spent three hours, two days in a row, at the Volkswagen booth.

The car finally arrived on July 12, 2002, and although I had never driven a manual transmission before, I learned on this car and never had any problems.  The car is now at 62,000 miles and it has made a trip from New York City to Reno, Nevada, in 2005, and the original clutch is still going strong.

Considering performance, availability and price, Mobil 1 was a clear choice. Mobil 1 0W-40 is one of the only oils easily found at local stores that has the specific Volkswagen approvals, such as VW 502.00 that is needed for this engine. Mobil 1 0W-40 goes even a step further because it bears the not-so-well-known but significant VW 503.01 stamp.
