This 1989 Ford Club Wagon XLT van is a daily driver; I put about 100 to 200
miles on it a day. Two to three times a week, I pull a 12-foot trailer with
two custom choppers on it. The van has a 351 W motor 30 over with a complete
Accel Ignition and the big A40D transmission. I change the transmission fluid
at 30,000 miles, and run Mobil Type F ATF transmission fluid and a Fairbanks
transmission cooler as well. I have all my tools in the van all the time
adding 2,000 lbs to the van. The water temperature stays at between 190° to
206° in the summer and cooler in the colder months.
I have used Mobil 1 10W-30 motor oil for about eight years; just recently
switching to Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5W-40. I change the oil at 4,500 miles like
clockwork. The oil smells different than any other oil when you change it, and
it stays cleaner longer. After driving for one hour or more, the oil is still
at 23 lbs at an idle in gear.
